Go to a black barber. They are much better at cutting thick or coarse hair
i like the short spikey look. a little gel, and you are on your way. you can get the barber to thin it out with the proper shears...
You can either go really short if you don't want to mess with it, but if you wanna make it work for you leave a bit of length and keep it under control with some heavy product, like wax or putty.
